Lesson from a Lamp

Filed under: Management Lesson,Uncategorized — questinstitutionslibrary @ 5:42 am

Have you seen a lamp lighting in the night. It enlightens the area surrounding it but there is darkness below it. It can make others able to see in the darkness but cannot be useful for itself where it is placed.

Moral: Do your DUTY sincerely without caring your personal interest. It is not neccesary that a person’s job may be equally useful for him/herself as for others.

Filed under: Management Lesson,Uncategorized — questinstitutionslibrary @ 7:43 am

Once two man, a farmer and his neighbour were fighting on an issue relating to the well and its water. The case was sent to the court of Akbar, the king. The farmer said “Sir, yesterday he sold his well to me. Today morning when my wife went to take water from the well, he asked to pay for the water. He says that he has sold the well only not the water of it.” After hearing the problem, Akbar asked his minister Birbal to solve the issue.

Birbal asked the former owner of the well “You have sold your well to him but for keeping water in the well you have to pay him rent or you must take out all of the water at once.” The neighbour was caught in his own trick. He applogised for that. The king also fined him for consuming the time of the court.

Moral: If you do not give the right share to the people, one day you have to pay more than their fare share.

Both walking with their horse reached to the village. The villagers laughed to see them. One of the villagers asked “What is the purpose of keeping horse with you when you are not riding it. Why dont you sit on the horse?” Hearing that the man and his son smiled and went forward.
Moral: People always ready to suggest you for doing a job, but use your head and finish the work in your own way.

Tips for better performance

Filed under: Management Lesson,Uncategorized — questinstitutionslibrary @ 5:40 am

How do you create this kind of a culture of appreciation?
1) Avoid awards that set people apart from each other, such as programs for the top sales person. Only one person can win this award, so only few will try. It also separates winners from losers. Instead have employees aim at beating their own sales from the previous month;

2) let employees set their own goals, help them understand how it helps the team and company, and acknowledge their contribution;

3) encourage employees to acknowledge others daily. Set up an informal network, like a newsletter or bulletin board where people can brag about their colleagues;

4) give employees the opportunity during meetings to talk about what they accomplished that week. In other words, let them brag about themselves;

5) recognize people for their strengths on more than specific projects or achievements. How does each individual’s strength contribute to the team as a whole?

6) make every employee aware of other’s strengths and give them a chance to learn from one another;

7) continually recognize the achievements of the group as a whole. Savor the feeling of achievement;
reinforce the value of the work itself. How employees function contributes to the community and their customers;

9) celebrate the vision of where the company is going and how the group, made up of the individuals in it, is helping get there;

10) design incentives to award departments as a whole, where everyone is awarded for the group’s accomplishments

Once a merchant was stolen his jewlery. He asked to all of his servants for that but all they denied. Ultimately he goes to the court of Akbar, the king. The king assigned the task of solving this problem to his minister, Birbal. Birbal called all the servants and gave one stick to each of the servants. He said “These stick are not ordinary but magical sticks of the same length. The stick of the servant who have stolen the jewlery will grow by one inch till toworrow. Bring them back tomorrow in the court.”

Next day all of the servant arrived with their sticks. Birbal asked them to show the sticks. He watched every stick carefully and said by pointing to one of the servant “This is the thief who have stolen the jewlery. He cut the stick by one inch so that he could not be caught.” Then he told the servant that the sticks are ordinary. This was a trap to catch the culprit.

The servant confessed his mistake and returned the jewlery to the merchant

Moral: When you have to deal with problem people you must be able to read their mind. To deal with people of different nature and category you must think at their level.
